December 10, 2023—As the readers of Arts & Culture Connections know, I am passionate about both mentoring and spreading joy through the arts. I was delighted to hear the multi-talented Adriana Zabala, the renowned mezzo-soprano and Yale music professor, talk about the importance of both during a recent interview on Arts Engines with Aaron Dworkin.
Ms. Zabala discussed the importance of cultivating a life as an artist that is holistic, rather than defining ourselves by the non-artistic things we do, such as our jobs or family responsibilities. She suggested that being an artist means utilizing our central focus to exercise our creative muscles to find something of value related to our artistic endeavors in every action we take.
Ms. Zabala emphasized the importance of self-compassion and positive self-talk in the face of obstacles. She said making our wellness a priority is the key to being able to approach our creative work with a full heart.
She also emphasized the importance of mentorship and said she believes it should be cultivated at the “mission-statement level” within all arts and academic organizations.
About joy, Ms. Zabala noted that it is an anecdote for the toughest days, especially when we dare to spread it—the joy of connection, expression, listening, and belonging in the world.
I found the interview with Ms. Zabala to be thought-provoking and uplifting. Check it out at this link.
