September 3, 2023—Victoria Valentine, who was on my list of 2021 Champions for the Arts, is the founder of the award-winning blog, CultureType. She stays on top of the world of visual arts from a Black perspective, sharing information weekly about emerging and established artists, as well as legends of the field; arts management promotions; exhibition openings; book reviews, and breakthrough achievements.
Ms. Valentine recently published the list of Black museum curators and arts leaders who have been promoted to leadership positions between January and June of 2023 for such prestigious organizations as the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture; the Brooklyn Arts Council, the Museum of Contemporary Arts Detroit and the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio.
The article includes an important note from the Mellon Foundation’s Elizabeth Alexander about a research study it did in conjunction with Ithaka S+R. The research, which was published in November 2022, found that although progress remains slow and uneven, “the demographics of museum employees across the country are becoming more reflective of the diverse communities their organizations serve.”
I urge the readers of Arts & Culture Connections to check out Ms. Valentine’s report at this link. As always, I would like to know what you think. I invite you to share your comments below.
